SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A state Senate confirmation committee has unanimously approved Amanda Smith as the new director of the state Department of Environmental Quality.
The Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Confirmation Committee voted on the nomination Tuesday.
The Deseret News in Salt Lake City reported on its Web site Tuesday that Smith's nomination will go before the full Senate on Sept. 16.
Smith said her job is to carry out policy at the direction of Gov. Gary Herbert, not to form positions on controversial issues. She said, for example, that it's her job to help educate Herbert on whether it makes sense to remain a member of the Western Climate Initiative.
