When it comes to beautiful scenery, the options in Europe are virtually limitless — but there are some things you just can’t miss in the springtime.

Breathtaking flower fields, blossoms, festivals, hiking trails, and thermal pools are just some of the things that await when you visit this time of year — and if that’s not enough to draw you in, then the smaller crowds, milder weather, and cheaper travel costs should be.

Here are eight spring scenes in Europe you’ll definitely want to add to your travel bucket list.

Keukenhof Gardens, Amsterdam

Springtime means flowers, and if you want to visit "the most beautiful spring garden in the world," the Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam are an absolute must.

Though it’s best known for its 7 million tulips, the Garden of Europe is truly a feast for the eyes with its variety of hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses and other blooming beauties. For the best chance of viewing the tulip fields in their full splendor, experts suggest booking a trip between mid-April to early May.

Feria de Abril, Spain

Light, color, and joy are what you’ll find at the Feria de Abril ("April Fair") in the Spanish city of Seville each spring. Held two weeks after Semana Santa (the week of Easter), Seville’s Fair is a celebration full of costumes, parades, bullfighting, games, tapas, and dancing. After a full week of day and night partying, the festival concludes with a dazzling fireworks display on the final evening.

But there are other benefits to traveling during this time of year. According to the Rick Steves travel blog, when you visit Seville in the spring, "the trees are covered with white and purple blossoms, and the air is heavy with the scent of orange and jasmine."

Westfjords, Iceland

For a more remote and rugged landscape full of beauty, you’ll want to put Iceland on your travel itinerary. The Westfjords region, in particular, is a good place for outdoor enthusiasts who like to hike and swim. With golden sand beaches, hot springs, waterfalls, and enormous cliffs, the scenery is sure to take your breath away.

Luxembourg Gardens, Paris

Ranked as the No. 5 thing to do in Paris by Tripadvisor, Luxembourg Gardens offers a nice reprieve from the bustle of the big city. The gardens were once only open to royalty before the French Revolution, but now anyone can enjoy a relaxing visit to this popular Parisian destination.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it feels like to stumble into a fairytale, Lake Bled is as close as you can get. According to Departures travel magazine, Lake Bled is the ideal travel destination for the springtime because of its picturesque island with the Julian Alps as the backdrop.

Complete with a castle, hiking trails, secluded swimming spots, and its namesake dessert, you’ll want to take the whole family on a rowboat adventure to visit the island.

Budapest, Hungary

To avoid the extreme temperatures in its Mediterranean-like climate, spring is considered to be the best season to visit the beautiful Hungarian capital of Budapest.

Budapest Local recommends you take a hike in the Buda Hills, enjoy a picnic around the cherry blossom trees, take a dip in a thermal bath, or visit one of the local farmers’ markets. Whether your visit coincides with the Budapest Spring Festival in April or Hungarian Ice Cream Day (May 8), you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained.

Vienna, Austria

Budapest isn’t the only place with beautiful cherry blossoms. During the month of March, the blossoms are in full bloom in Vienna, Austria. Take a stroll through Stadtpark, a green oasis at the center of the city, and you’ll be able to enjoy these cherry blossoms while you take a selfie with the famous gold-plated statue of Johann Strauss.

You can see these romantic scenes on the Danube River Cruise.

Prague, Czech Republic

While you can visit Prague any time of the year to enjoy its world-famous Gothic architecture, spring is a good season to visit if you enjoy music festivals, botanical gardens, and tepid weather.

It’s also a good place to go if you’re in love. On May 1, the Czech "Valentine’s Day," you’ll find many couples enjoying a smooch under the cherry blossom trees on Petrin Hill. According to legend, a woman needs to be kissed under a cherry blossom tree to prevent her from drying out during the upcoming year.
