BIRDSEYE, Utah County — A teenager has died and one woman is in critical condition after a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 89 Sunday morning, officials said.
The crash took place about 8:20 a.m. near milepost 305, near Birdseye in southeast Utah County, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andrew Battenfield.
Baylor Stout, 13, of South Jordan, died from his injuries after being taken to a hospital, Battenfield said. A 31-year-old woman was in critical condition and a 48-year-old man was in fair condition after the accident.
A Kia Sedona traveling south drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was towing two recreational vehicles. The crash caused the truck to roll off the west side of the road, Battenfield said.
The woman was driving the Sedona, while Baylor and his father were in the pickup truck.
The woman was flown by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital with serious injuries while Baylor and his father were transported by ambulance "in order to receive ongoing medical treatment which is not available during flight," Battenfield said.
Baylor was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His father suffered injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
All three people injured in the crash were wearing seat belts, Battenfield said.
Officials suspect drowsy driving to be a contributing factor in the crash, he added.
Highway 89 was closed after the crash, but had reopened as of 2 p.m., Battenfield said. However, it will be closing again because another tow truck will be needed to retrieve the truck that crashed, he said.
Editor's note: A version of this article previously listed inaccurate ages for the woman and man involved in the crash. The story has been updated to include their correct ages. Police also initially said the victim's name was Maylor. It has been corrected to Baylor.
