RECOGNIZING REAL — As the saying goes, real recognizes real.

That goes for a Utah Jazz legend recognizing a rising star, a current Jazzman recognizing the fan base in its past, present and future, and a Real Salt Lake legend recognizing his teammate for scoring a crucial goal on his birthday.

Donovan Mitchell isn’t playing in the NBA Summer League this year. But the world is taking note of him every time he shows up to support his teammates like Grayson Allen, both in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

That includes one Jazz legend.

Karl "The Mailman" Malone gave "Spida" Mitchell a shoutout on Twitter this weekend, posting a photo of Mitchell in a "No. 32" throwback jersey and asking for a jersey swap.

"Way to represent, young fella," Malone wrote. "Send me one of yours. Haven’t worn a jersey in a while, but I’ll rep yours."

The legend of a fan-favorite continues.

Favors for Guv 🎩 🎷

Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors re-signed last week, a two-year deal reportedly worth $36 million to the Atlanta native in Salt Lake City.

While Utah did not disclose specific terms of the deal, it did post an essay written by Favors on utahjazz.com that illustrates why he was such a high priority to bring back.

"Last year was a little different for me personally. I had to sacrifice a lot," wrote Favors, who also spoke to the media Friday alongside fellow free-agent signings Dante Exum and Raul Neto. "I had to sacrifice touches. I had to sacrifice shots, minutes, everything really. But I knew it was best for the team. I had to find a way to just make an impact. It was worth the sacrifice.

"We won a lot of games, made it to the second round of the playoffs. But now I want more. I want to win a championship."

It’s a stark contrast from almost exactly one year ago, when former Jazz star Gordon Hayward revealed in a stunning essay in the Derek Jeter-owned blog The Players Tribune why he was leaving Utah for the Boston Celtics.

Does Favors have a career in politics?

You be the judge of that. But if he wants to stay in Utah for as long as he contends, he’ll have no problem establishing residency to make a run at the gubernatorial bid in several years.

Gov. Gary Herbert did not return a request for comment, by the way — but we’ll update you if he does respond.

Real Salt Lake stretched its unbeaten run at home to nine-straight Saturday with a 2-0 win over West-leading FC Dallas.

Albert Rusnak celebrated his birthday with a penalty-kick goal, and Luis Silva iced the win in stoppage time. But the result was also Nick Rimando’s 142nd career shutout, and Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in every major statistical goalkeeping category showed why is he still a legend during Rusnak’s postgame interview with sideline reporter Samantha Yarock.

Never change, Rimando.
