FROSTING GALORE — If it seems like there’s a national day for everything, it’s because there is.
Wednesday marks the auspicious National Cupcake Lovers Day, not to be confused with National Cupcakes Day on Dec. 15. Why we need both is a mystery to me, but can there really be too many reasons to celebrate cupcakes and those that love them? I think not.
Three cupcake shops from Utah have won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” so if you love the frosting-laden confections, then the Beehive State is the place for you.
In honor of all you cupcake lovers out there, here are seven of the best places to celebrate National Cupcake LOVERS Day in Utah:
Sweet Tooth Fairy
The Sweet Tooth Fairy is probably the most well-known cupcake shop in Utah. In a very scientific poll I conducted on Twitter, the bakery won 69 percent of the vote for Utahns’ favorite place to get cupcakes.
Megan Faulkner Brown, founder of the Sweet Tooth Fairy, won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” in 2012, and the bakery has continued to grow since with eight locations in Utah and many more throughout the country.
The most popular item, according to the bakery, is the strawberry shortcake cupcake. The Sweet Tooth Fairy is celebrating Wednesday by offering a dozen cupcakes for $15.

Cravings
Cravings was founded by Nephi-native Alisha Nuttall, who also won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” in 2013 with a bleu cheese and Pop Rocks cupcake. Following the win, Nuttall opened the Cravings storefront with her sister, who eventually went on to found Cravings Bistro.
Cravings offers a variety of unique monthly flavors, including maple bacon, strawberry Nutella cheesecake and “dirt cup.”

So Cupcake
The idea for So Cupcake was born on a Make-a-Wish trip to New York City for the So Cupcake founders’ daughter who has cerebral palsy. After eating some delicious cupcakes in the city, they went home and started making their own recipes.
“Where (our daughter) lacks in mobility, she excels in her incredible imagination. Her undaunted courage set in motion our sweet endeavor. All that we are and all that we feel is part of each cupcake we bake,” the bakery’s website reads.
So Cupcake donates all remaining cupcakes to local hospitals, shelters and nursing homes at the end of each day.

The Cupcake Shoppe and Bakery
The Cupcake Shoppe and Bakery offers gourmet cupcakes, gluten-free cupcakes and more. The bakery also offers wedding and event catering.
Cupcake Shoppe’s most popular item is the Better Than Sunshine cupcake. The shop has 4.8 stars on Facebook.

Heaven Cupcake
Heaven Cupcake is a delivery-only service, so if you’re looking to have some sugary goodness brought straight to your door, this bakery is the way to go.
Heaven Cupcake was founded by Erik and Cori Larsen while Erik was still a student at the University of Utah. The bakery has also made an appearance on “Cupcake Wars.”
Heaven Cupcake’s most popular item is the churro peanut butter cupcake. The cake is fried and rolled in cinnamon and sugar, then filled with dulce de leche and topped with a peanut butter cream cheese frosting and more dulce de leche.

Mrs. Backer’s Pastry Shop
As one Google reviewer put it, Mrs. Backer’s is like stepping back in time to your grandmother’s house. The shop has been serving Salt Lake City since 1941.
While Mrs. Backer’s sells more than just cupcakes, it’s known for its floral frosting decorations. The shop will even offer you a free cupcake on your birthday!

Sweet Cake Bake Shop
The Sweet Cake Bake Shop was inspired by founder Allison Regan’s Celiac diagnosis when she finally discovered that it was gluten making her sick all the time. The bakery now sells purely gluten-free products and specializes in offering delicious treats to those with Celiac disease.
The most popular item varies by shop, but the Kaysville location’s best-selling cupcake is tied between the chocolate with chocolate buttercream and red velvet with cream cheese frosting. The Salt Lake location’s most popular items are the vegan and dairy-free cupcakes.
