MOAB — A Minnesota man died after he fell while rappelling in Moonflower Canyon Monday evening, authorities said.

Scott Henning, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fall, Grand County sheriff’s officials said in a statement Tuesday.

Authorities said Henning had hiked with a friend to an area above Moonflood Canyon, an area south of Moab, and was attempting to rappel down a cliff into the canyon when he fell about 60 feet just before 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a fall and located him with a helicopter, but Henning died before he could be transported. Officials said terrain made access to the area difficult.

Henning’s body was recovered Tuesday with the help of a Department of Public Safety helicopter because of safety concerns Monday night, authorities said. Henning's body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
