LAYTON — A 14-year-old Fillmore boy is in extremely critical condition after an early morning crash on I-15, officials said.

The crash took place just after 3 a.m. on I-15 northbound near the Layton Hills Mall, Utah Highway Patrol officials said on the agency’s website.

The 18-year-old driver of a red Acura fell asleep at the wheel and drifted off the right side of the road, where he hit a crash cushion barrier, officials said.

The Acura bounced back into traffic and collided with a Ford Flex. The 14-year-old, who was in the Acura, was ejected from the car.

After the boy was ejected, a gray Nissan Z hit him, and then hit the Acura. The 14-year-old was taken to Davis Hospital and then transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City in extremely critical condition, officials said.

The driver of the Acura was taken to a hospital in Ogden with leg and head injuries, officials said. Two occupants in the Ford Flex had injuries and were taken to Davis Hospital and later transferred to University Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The driver of the Nissan had minor injuries but did not need medical attention. Officials said neither occupant of the Acura was wearing a seatbelt. All other people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

The 18-year-old Acura driver had worked a 12-hour shift and then had been visiting family members in Salt Lake City, officials said. He was driving home when the crash took place.

The 14-year-old is a cousin of the Acura driver, officials said.

Officials did not release the names of anyone involved in the crash.
