BLUFFDALE – Many students are starting summer vacation as we head into Memorial Day weekend, and the Jordan School District is making sure they all have classrooms in the future.

Explosive growth in the southern part of the Salt Lake Valley has schools bursting at the seams, and thousands of more students are moving in.

Currently, 53,000 students attend classes in the Jordan School District. In a few years, that’s estimated to be 56,000.

Friday morning, students and officials with hardhats and golden shovels broke ground on two new schools in Bluffdale, which will be built on 1300 West near 15700 South.

“The city is opening a 25-acre park in conjunction with this, and it is going to be a great part of the Bluffdale community,” said Matthew Young, a member of Jordan School Board.

Construction will start soon on the elementary and middle schools, which will be built side by side, relieving some serious overcrowding.

“Bluffdale Elementary services all of Bluffdale and part of Herriman and is approaching 1,300 elementary school students, and we have 12 portables, and the principal and teachers are doing an amazing job taking care of those students,” Young said.

Jordan School District officials hope to get ahead of the growth. It’s building five schools and hopes to have them all open by the fall of 2020.
