HYRUM — The body of a male teen who apparently drowned after jumping off a cliff Friday at Hyrum Reservoir has been recovered, authorities said.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said the body had been recovered about 8:30 p.m. Friday. A search effort for the man turned into a recovery effort earlier on Friday afternoon.

Jensen said emergencies crews responded to a report of a possible drowning at the Hyrum Dam.

The person, whose name and age were not released, was jumping off the "Big Toe" cliff into the reservoir along with about 40 other teens, Jensen said. He added the area is a restricted area on the east side of the dam.

A witness told authorities the teen jumped from the cliff and struggled to swim after he surfaced from the jump. The teen then went back underwater and didn't resurface. Others tried finding him before rescue crews arrived on scene, Jensen said.

Emergency units from Hyrum City Fire Department, Logan Fire Department and Cache County Sheriff's Office assisted responded to an area in the water near a cliff. A medical helicopter landed at the scene of the search but later took off without assisting in the search.

Cameron Shirra, of North Ogden, said he was camping at the reservoir area Friday afternoon when he heard the sirens.

"We walked to the water area over here and started to watch the activity," he said. "These poor kids over here — very sad. It's a very sad incident for them."

Jensen said on-call crisis workers from Bear River Mental Health and Cache County Victim Advocates were used to help offer services for witnesses and for others who may need it.
