TAYLORSVILLE — Police arrested a man outside a Taylorsville home where shots were reported fired Monday afternoon.

Franklin Asifoa, 46, was taken into custody after he exited the home that was surrounded by officers, according to Unified police. Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said a woman who had been in the home with Asifoa came out first and told officers he would surrender if he was offered mental health services.

No one was injured by the gunfire, police said. No specific details were given about the circumstances surrounding the gun being discharged.

Asifoa was booked into Salt Lake County jail for investigation of aggravated assault, discharging a firearm and criminal mischief.

He and a woman had remained inside the house at 4155 W. 6550 South after a man and another person left, Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke said.

A SWAT team and negotiators had responded to the home on a report that someone was barricaded inside following what Unified police called "an armed domestic situation."

Lohrke did not provide additional details about the two people who left the home before police arrived. He said they spoke with officers.

Neighbors were told to shelter in place Monday afternoon as officers negotiated.

"Things do happen," said Christy Altheman, who lives in the neighborhood. "And people have emotions that sometimes let them get the best of people."
