ST. GEORGE — Saturday’s Class 4A state baseball championship was a pitcher’s duel between Region 9 rivals Desert Hills and Dixie.
Dixie’s Tyson Fisher struck out eight in seven innings of work, while Desert Hills' counterpart Dallen Turner hurled 11 strikeouts.
In one moment, the deadlock broke — in the Flyers’ favor.
Kayler Yates drove in the only run of the game in walk-off fashion, and Dixie won its second-straight state title 1-0 over Desert Hills at Dixie State.
Blake Oaks’ double in the bottom of the seventh started the rally. One batter later, with runners on the corners, Yates drove in the game winner on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze.
And that was all she wrote.
4A softball championship
Bear River 5, Spanish Fork 4
At Spanish Fork Complex, Oaklee Trapp’s walk-out single helped the Bears edge the Dons for the 4A title.
The Bears trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, but Taylor Fox drove in two to tie the game at four-all.
With two outs in the seventh, Trapp’s single barely beat the tag for the game-winner.
“I was excited, because in the beginning of the year, they beat us pretty good,” Fox said. “This was revenge time.”
3A softball championship
Grantsville 6, Union 1
At Spanish Fork, freshman August Cowan smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning to help Grantsville defend its title against Union.
“It’s surreal,” Cowan said. “As freshmen, I didn’t expect us to be where we are right now.
“But we’ve been playing really good, and we have a lot of talent on the team.”
2A softball championship
Gunnison Valley 12, Enterprise 2
At Spanish Fork, winning pitcher Emily Brackett crushed a two-run homer and the Bulldogs jumped all over the Wolves early to win their first state title in a girls sport in 39 years.
“I’m so excited,” Brackett said. “We finally pulled through. Our hits came through, and everything just came together.
“I never thought I would feel like this, but to bring it home to the community is awesome.”
