LOGAN — Utah State’s leading scorer is headed to the Big East.

Former Aggie star Koby McEwen will reportedly transfer to Marquette, becoming the first defection under new coach Craig Smith.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. McEwen announced the move himself a few moments later.

The 6-foot-4 sophomore guard who prepped at Wasatch Academy averaged 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Aggies en route to a 17-17 record and an 8-10 finish in Mountain West play.

The season proved to be the last under former head coach Tim Duryea, who was fired just days after the conference tournament in Las Vegas and replaced by South Dakota’s Smith.

But shortly after Smith’s introductory press conference, McEwen announced his intention to transfer. A native of Toronto, Ontario, McEwen reportedly held interest from Creighton, Ohio State, Oregon, Grand Canyon and Akron, among others.

Now the former Mountain West freshman of the year will suit up in a Power-6 league.

McEwen will have two seasons at Marquette after sitting out the upcoming 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer restrictions.

Smith added two former South Dakota assistant coaches to his staff over the weekend, finalizing deals to bring Austin Hansen and Eric Peterson to Logan.

“Austin and Eric are the total package,” Smith said in a statement from the school. “They are great coaches, recruiters and mentors for the men in our program. They have wonderful families that will thrive in Logan. We went 48-21 over the last two years at South Dakota and both of these men were a major reason for our success.”

In addition to the two assistant coaches, former South Dakota commit Tauriawn Knight also pledged his support to the Aggies last week. Knight is a 6-foot-1 native of Edmond, Oklahoma, who averaged 19 points per game at Santa Fe High School and led his team to the Class 6A state title game.
