SALT LAKE CITY — The NHL is coming to Utah.

The Los Angeles Kings will face the Vancouver Canucks in a preseason game on Sept. 24 at Vivint Arena, the Kings announced Friday. It's the first time a National Hockey League game will have been played in Utah since 2008, when the Kings played the San Jose Sharks in an exhibition at the Maverik Center.

2018's game is the beginning of a three-year agreement between the Kings and Vivint Arena, in which they'll host a preseason game each year in Salt Lake City.

"The Kings are excited to return to Salt Lake City on the whole and Vivint Smart Home Arena in particular," Kings president Luc Robitaille said in a statement. "Salt Lake City is a wonderful area with great hockey tradition. This game is special and this series is something we are very much looking forward to."

Vivint Arena was formerly the home of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles from 1991-94, as well as the host rink for skating events in the 2002 Olympic Games.

Two players on the Kings have Salt Lake City ties. Forward Trevor Lewis attended Brighton High School and won two Stanley Cups as a member of the Kings in 2012 and 2014. Lewis scored 14 goals for the Kings in the 2017-18 season. Daniel Brickley, a Skyline High star, signed with the Kings Thursday. Brickley is a defense prospect who had multiple NHL suitors before choosing the Kings.

Tickets for the game go on sale at 1:30 p.m. MT Friday and can be purchased at the Vivint Arena website or box office.
