SALT LAKE CITY — One woman was killed and two others were hospitalized in critical condition Sunday as a result of a rollover crash about 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of California Avenue and Bangerter Highway.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the woman who died was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee that ran a red light at the intersection while traveling at high speeds and collided with the driver's side of a passenger car.

The car that was stuck rolled off the road and the Jeep spun backward, striking a utility pole and rolling onto its side, the UHP said. As the Jeep rolled, a passenger was ejected from the vehicle and fatally injured.

Prior to the crash, a Department of Natural Resources officer made contact with the driver of the Cherokee on the frontage road near the Lee Kay Shooting Center regarding "possible criminal activity," according to the UHP. The center is a full-service public shooting range operated by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

The driver fled and the wildlife officers lost sight of the vehicle as it turned from 5600 West to head east on California Avenue, troopers said.

Investigators were attempting to identify the deceased woman Sunday night and whether the Jeep was stolen.
