MIDVALE — A man suspected in a Layton bank robbery that occurred Tuesday is also believed to be connected to at least two gas station robberies in the Salt Lake Valley, police said Wednesday.

Unified police released surveillance video of a robbery reported at a Phillips 66 gas station located at 8370 S. State St. Sunday afternoon. In the video, a man is seen pointing a handgun at a clerk and leaving the station with cash from the register and a carton of cigarettes.

Salt Lake police also released an image from an armed robbery at a Sinclair gas station, 2690 S. 700 East, Sunday. Police said a man pointed a gun at a clerk and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The man in both cases is described as white, in his mid-30s, and heavy set with a short scruffy auburn-colored beard. He was wearing a camouflage jacket, black gloves and khaki-colored pants. He fled in the station in a dark-colored older model Honda Civic.

Authorities released the video from the Phillips 66 robbery and an image from the Sinclair robbery Wednesday, a day after a man with a matching description was accused of robbing a KeyBank in Layton at gunpoint. The man left the bank in a similarly-described vehicle.

“We do believe he’s the same suspect,” Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke said.

Unified police’s Violent Crimes Unit, as well as Layton and Salt Lake police are working with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force in investigating the armed robbery cases.

Lohrke said he hoped the surveillance video released by Unified police Wednesday would help to identify or capture the man.

“The quality of the video helps a ton,” he said. “We can zoom in and get a really good facial description. There can be anyone out there that sees him and knows him or recognized him.”

Authorities say anyone who may know who the man is encouraged to call Unified police at 385-468-9819 or Layton police at 801-497-8300.
