SANDY — Police are looking for a man in connection with a "brazen" sexual assault on a trail not far from a TRAX station and a popular park Monday afternoon.

A woman in her 40s was jogging on a trail, located close to 9980 S. 300 East, that connects the Sandy Civic Center TRAX station with three parks and several homes in the area when she was pulled off the trail and attacked about 1 p.m., Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielson said.

The woman flagged down nearby bystanders in the area after the attack, Nielson said. The bystanders then called police. The man suspected in the attack fled before police were called.

The jogger was transported to a hospital in fair condition, Nielson added. He said it's standard procedure for nurses to conduct a rape kit test at the hospital.

Police said they are searching for a black man believed to be in his 20s wearing a black beanie with a yellow fish skeleton insignia, a plaid jacket, and red, black and white checkered Vans-style shoes. Authorities say he is 6-feet tall with a thin build.

The attack happened in an area with several running and walking trails, including Dimple Dell Regional Park, Dewey Bluth Park and the Porter Rockwell Trail.

Nielson said the attack "came as a shock" to the police department, calling the area generally quiet. He said the path is typically used by joggers and horse enthusiasts, as well as children coming to and from school.

"It's an extremely brazen act to do this in the middle of the daytime with how busy this place can be," he said. "It's extremely concerning to us. That's why we want to catch him and get him off the street as soon as we can."

Anyone with information about the sexual assault or the man should call Sandy police at 801-568-4636 or emergency dispatch at 801-799-3000.
