SALT LAKE CITY — For most teams, a 41-point win in the state quarterfinals would be something worth getting excited about. But for undefeated Olympus, it's their third 40-point win in the month of February.
So perhaps it wasn't surprising that the Titans easily dispatched Viewmont, 86-45, behind terrific shooting early and often from the whole squad.
University of Utah commit Rylan Jones led the attack for Olympus, nearly getting a triple-double with 16 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds. Jones, a 6-foot junior point guard, found his teammates repeatedly with wide open looks, including with some highlight-reel passes in transition and cross court.
"He's the most unselfish kid. It's rare to see. He won them over with the way he plays," Olympus coach Matt Barnes said. "He plays the whole game. He's tough defensively, he takes charges, he rebounds, he's a great scorer. And on this team with so many great shooters, he's the catalyst."
Jeremy DowDell led the team with 24 points, shooting 8-17 from the field and 6-12 from beyond the 3-point line — 22 of those points came before halftime.
"We definitely took it to them in the first half, and shot super well," DowDell said.
But Dowdell wasn't alone in the scoring column. Harrison Creer, who doubles as Olympus' starting quarterback during the football season, scored 21 points on 8-11 shooting, dominating the overmatched Viewmont big men. Spencer Jones added 14 points on six shots.
Olympus' lead was solid from the get-go. The Titans jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, which finished 29-11, then continued to put the pressure on by leading by 24 points at the half, and 34 by the end of the third quarter. Viewmont scored just 12 points in the paint and shot just 6-27 from beyond the arc.
Parker Kearns led Viewmont with 16 points, while Spencer Mackay scored 13 and Josh Mordue added in 12.
So while Olympus has gotten yet another impressive win, DowDell also didn't want to linger on the performance too much. "We didn't come here just to win two games. We want to win the next game, and the game after that," he said.
Olympus will face Bountiful at 4:10 p.m. on Friday at the Huntsman Center in the 5A semifinal.
