THE STUDIO — The reason why mashups are fun is that two things that don’t seem like they would mesh well somehow do.

And when I say “somehow,” I mean that some creative thinker can see or hear disparate things and understand how they can fit together. When done well, mashups are a source of true delight and wonder on the internet.

That’s why you’ll be at least slightly intrigued when you hear that this video features a cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” on a violin. But local violinist Rob Landes has added another layer of intrigue to the mix: the world’s first and only acoustic violin made completely of titanium, excluding the bridge and strings.

Basically he’s playing metal with metal. (Get it?)

Of course the video would fall flat if it weren’t for Landes’ uber talent for playing the violin, and incorporation of a looper machine for one-take videos. It’s a feat that takes an incredible amount of music arrangement, planning and practice to pull off.

The titanium violin certainly produces its own unique sound. So if heavy metal and metal violins aren’t your thing, you can check out more from Landes playing some regular ol’ violins on his YouTube channel.
