LOGAN — A Logan High School teacher known for running a regular student news broadcast was arrested Friday on investigation of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Deputies discovered both Joseph Scott Harris, 57, and a 15-year-old girl, partially clothed in a parked vehicle in West Haven, according to an arrest affidavit.

During an interview, Harris told detectives he met the 15-year-old girl online, he thought the girl was 19, but acknowledged she looked young, according to the document. The girl told deputies in an interview that she had met up with Harris multiple times for sexual activity, starting in early January 2018, according to the affidavit. Harris told deputies the two had engaged in sexual activity three times, the affidavit said.

District administrators found out about the arrest Friday morning, and told KSL they are cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate the case.

"Mr. Harris has been placed on immediate suspension from the district pending the outcome of the investigation," Logan City School District Superintendent Frank Schofield said in a statement to KSL.

A few students KSL reached out to Saturday said they had not yet heard the news of Harris' arrest.

"It's honestly really kind of shocking," sophomore Lindsay Mora said. "Especially from a teacher at Logan High. You usually feel pretty safe with the teachers there, and not really expecting anything from them."

Mora said she took Harris's broadcasting class twice, and that she enjoyed working behind the camera to produce stories and live streams. She says Harris seemed to enjoy the role he played.

"He really loved the news," Mora said. "He would take such a big interest in it, and the stories that he would run, he would make sure it was the best that it possibly could be."
