RICHFIELD, Sevier County — An 85-year-old man is dead after a house fire early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 4 a.m., a fire started in the bedroom of Owen Kay Reynolds near 2330 E. 1700 North. His wife, Linda Reynolds, 61, was woken up by her husband as he yelled for her to get a fire extinguisher, the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Linda Reynolds grabbed the fire extinguisher from the kitchen and ran to her husband’s bedroom. She pulled the pin on the extinguisher, but when she pressed the lever on it, nothing happened, the statement said.

Officials said Linda Reynolds tried to get into the bedroom to get her husband, but it was too hot, and she could not see anything because of the smoke and flames. She then ran and called 911.

At 4:03 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the fire. Firefighters fought the flames so they could get into the bedroom, locate Owen Reynolds and bring him out, the sheriff’s office statement said. Owen Reynolds was taken to Sevier Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There will be an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Officials do not suspect foul play.

Officials contacted Red Cross to assist Linda Reynolds whose entire home was damaged by smoke and flames.

A GoFundMe page* has been set up to help Linda Reynolds with expenses.
