SALT LAKE CITY — Street racing resulted in a car crashing into a monument in Salt Lake City early Saturday morning, police say.

At least two cars were driving north on State Street in Salt Lake City just after 1 a.m. Saturday in what police say was a street race, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Mark Buhman. As the lanes merged from three to two, one of the cars clipped the other, causing that car to lose control and crash into a base of the Eagle Gate monument, located in the median of State Street just north of South Temple.

The lieutenant said the car hit the side of the monument base and damaged it, but the structure of the monument has been deemed secure.

The driver of the car that crashed, who Buhman confirmed is an adult male in his 20s, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The driver of the car that caused the other car to crash stayed on the scene and spoke with officers, he said. Officials did not identify either driver.

Officials believe two or three cars were involved in the race and are still investigating what happened.

More information will be posted throughout the day.
