ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — Republicans in southern Utah are gearing up to choose a replacement for a Utah lawmaker who resigned ahead of reports that he met up with a prostitute in taxpayer-funded hotel rooms.
The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports Washington County Republicans are set to meet Monday evening to vote on a replacement for Rep. Jon Stanard.
Their choice must be approved by Gov. Gary Herbert before serving out the rest of Stanard's term.
Washington County Republican Party Chairman Jimi Kestin says it is important to move quickly to find a replacement before the end of the legislative session on March 8.
Stanard abruptly stepped down last week, a day before DailyMail.com reported allegations that he paid for sex with a prostitute twice in 2017. His district includes Washington City and part of St. George.
