OREM — Mountain Crest’s Tanner Lofthouse has accomplished a lot of things in his wrestling career, placing at the state tournament for three seasons.

But one thing eluded him heading into his senior year.

Not anymore.

Lofthouse won the first state title of his career, and Mountain Crest clinched its first state title since 2014 with 253 points at the Class 4A state tournament Saturday at Utah Valley University.

Uintah finished second with 202.5 points, followed by Payson (188), Bear River (153) and Canyon View (124).

“We proved that we are one of the top schools in the state,” said Lofthouse, who comes from a long line of state champion wrestlers among his brothers, uncles and grandparents. “I think we’ll have another one in the next couple of years, too.

“This is special because it’s my first, but it’ll be part of the wall, too.”

Braydon Mogle won a state title at 113 pounds for the Mustangs, who added state runners-up in Logan Mano (132), Jace Dart (138), Brayden Guthrie (152), Jace Gunnell (182) and Eli Wells (285).

While the Mustangs relied on depth for the team title, Lofthouse’s win cemented a special year for the community around Hyrum.

“Tanner has placed four times, and he’s always been good. But he was so dominant this year, I don’t think anybody saw that coming,” said Mountain Crest coach Davey Swensen, who was named 4A coach of the year.

“To beat the kids he beat, the Rangles and the Wilcoxes and other great wrestlers. I expected him to be a champion, but I didn’t expect him to be that dominant.”

In the first full season of the newly organized Class 4A, Mountain Crest proved it belongs with the best in the state.

The wrestling championship is the first in a team sport since the Mustangs were re-classified in 4A along with its Cache Valley neighbors.

“This is special for the school,” Swensen said. “We had all that we had to go through, and it hurt our spirit a bit.

“We get great support from our community, and I think it’s really healing. We’re back, we belong, and we feel like we always belonged. It was what it was, but we are where we belong right now.”

Mountain Crest won its sixth state wrestling title in school history, and fifth under Swensen, who returned to coaching after a brief retirement after the Mustangs’ 2008 title.

Class 3A

There’s a new dynasty in small-school wrestling.

Conner Ingram (113), Gentry Warner (132), Cade Bowring (138), Joey Aagard (160) and Talon Mangelson (195) each won an individual state title to lead Juab to its second-straight team championship with 304 points at the 3A state tournament Saturday.

Thirty-four-time state champion Delta was second with 224.5 points, followed by Morgan (171), Union (132) and Emery (128).

Among the notable individual performances, American Leadership Academy’s Sage Mortimer became the second girl to place in a state tournament in Utah high school history. The lightweight placed fourth at 106 pounds, a decade after Uintah’s Candace Workman finished second.
