SALT LAKE CITY — House Speaker Greg Hughes proposed the idea Thursday that Utah create an "inland port authority" — a new governing body to oversee development of an area in Salt Lake City that could be used for a trade hub.
The 3,000-acre area is slated for development in the west quadrant of Salt Lake City. It's being considered for an inland port — a global trade hub for rail, truck and air transport, the Deseret News reports.
Hughes said during Thursday's presentation on Utah's Capitol Hill that the area is uniquely positioned because of its proximity to I-15, I-80 and the Salt Lake City International Airport. He said it could add millions of dollars to Utah's economy as a large global trading hub.
Members of the City Council and Mayor Jackie Biskupski have said they're concerned the state would try to take control of the area.
A bill creating the inland port authority is still being drafted, according to Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, who will be sponsoring the bill.
