COALVILLE — Troopers arrested a man following a high-speed chase that reached speeds over 100 miles per hour on I-80 in Summit County Wednesday night.

Around 10:30 p.m., officers tried to pull over a white Buick driving erratically on I-80 eastbound near Coalville, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Royce. The driver sped away instead, leading troopers on a high-speed chase.

The fleeing vehicle turned westbound on I-80 and stopped. The driver fled on foot but was tracked down by a K-9 unit around 1 a.m., Thursday. Troopers also used a helicopter and the help of other law enforcement agencies to locate the fleeing driver.

Troopers arrested Theron Jack Simmons, 44, and planned to book him into the Summit County Jail.

Before he was captured, law enforcement used reverse 911 calls to warn Park City area residents to be on the lookout for him. Road signs warned motorists not to pick up hitchhikers in the area, Royce said.

Investigators found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the car, which was stolen out of the Unified Police Department jurisdiction, Royce said.
