PANGUITCH — A man was arrested after his elderly mother's body was found buried in a coal bin at her Panguitch home Wednesday, authorities said.
Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday that Peter Marker, 66, of Panguitch, was arrested in connection with the case. Garfield County Jail records show he was arrested on suspicion of failure to report a dead body.
Denise Dastrup, public information officer for the Garfield County Sheriff's Office, said a family member of the 90-year-old woman who lived at the home received a letter from her uncle stating that her grandmother had died on Dec. 25 and that he had “taken care of the body.”
The letter was given to law enforcement in St. George, who contacted the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Dastrup said. Deputies responded to the home and found a 90-year-old woman’s body under a “large amount of coal” at the home, Dastrup said.
She added that Marker was the woman's son.
Jail records show Marker's bail was set at $670. Court records show he doesn't have any criminal history in Utah.
