Have You Seen This? YouTuber sings eerie renditions of classic Christmas hits

CHRISTMAS CAROLVILLE — We all know that "the best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear," in the immortal words of "Elf."

But what if the songs you're singing are a little more spooky than cheery?

YouTuber Chase Holfelder released a video last week where he puts an eerie twist on some of the most classic Christmas carols in the book by singing them in a minor key. The results are a compilation of chilling, yet beautiful Christmas hits.

"Most Christmas songs are in a happy, feel-good major key," Holfelder explains in his video, which is why he decided to switch things up and sing them in a minor key.

Yesterday's Have You Seen This?

Holfelder first sings a snippet of each carol in the typical, recognizable major key to give the listener context. But as he changes keys, the typically joyful hits turn darker and more angsty.

Holfelder has become known for his minor key renditions of recognizable hits on YouTube over the past several years. Some of his pop remixes have several million views, including his version of Cindi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." And it seems he may have gotten the idea for this year's Christmas video when he covered Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," in a minor key back in 2015.

It's definitely fun to hear these classic songs sung in an unusual way, and it doesn't hurt that Holfelder has an amazing voice he uses to sing all the harmonies himself. If you're someone who likes a little bit more chill with your Christmas joy, you'll like Holfelder's Christmas video this year. Enjoy the video and then let us know in the comments below what your favorite Christmas carol is.
