MOAB — A man with prior felony convictions was arrested after stealing several firearms, hiding them throughout his home and burying some in his backyard, police said.

Police responded to a local residence in Moab on Friday after reports of some firearm thefts, according to Moab Police Chief Jim Winder. The resident told police that an AR-15 rifle and two handguns — a Wesson .40 caliber handgun and a Kimber Custom 2 1911 .45 caliber handgun — had been stolen from a vehicle parked on his property sometime between Wednesday and Friday.

Police followed a tip given by a citizen and obtained a search warrant for the residence of Charles Anthony Nelson, 21, Winder said. Officers made contact with Nelson on Sunday and he “admitted to the theft and led officers to the stolen firearms, which were located in various locations in the home and buried in the backyard,” Winder said.

Nelson is a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess firearms, Winder said. He was arrested and booked into the Grand County Jail.
