FLIPPING FOR UPSETS — Did you catch this past weekend in college football?

In a week where no top 25 programs faced off, four of the top 10 lost. The madness began Friday night — Friday the 13th, that is — with stunning wins by Syracuse and Cal over No. 2 Clemson and No. 8 Washington State, respectively.

It was the first time in college football history that two top 10 teams lost on the same day that was not on a Saturday.

The historical weekend made our list of Great Clips of the weekend, as well as a touching show of sportsmanship by South Carolina’s quarterback and a geographical misstep by Major League Soccer.

As always, click the video above for each of our Great Clips of the Week.

Cal QB proves he’s the best gymnast in college football

The Golden Bears handed No. 8 Washington State its first loss of the season with a 27-3 win in Berkeley, California, over the weekend.

And Cal quarterback Ross Bowers was so excited, he flipped his lid.

Bowers, whose mother Joanne spent 10 years as the head gymnastics coach at Washington, scored on a third and goal in the fourth quarter, flipping into the end zone and rotating in midair for a touchdown.

The flip was nearly flawless; the landing, not so much.

Whatever score the French judges give Bowers, he walked out with one of the bigger upsets of the weekend on a college football weekend full of them.

Sportsmanship at its finest

It’s easy to revel in your team’s big win.

But it takes a bigger man, sometimes, to extend a helping hand to the other side.

South Carolina’s Jake Bentley did that after the Gamecocks overturned a 9-3 halftime deficit to beat Tennessee 15-9. The quarterback ran back onto the field at Neyland Stadium and extended a warm hand to Tennessee signal caller Jarrett Guarantano.

Guarantano made his first career start Saturday, and had a chance to win the game for the Vols in the final seconds before his near-game winner fell incomplete.

The Vols dropped to 3-3 with a 0-3 start to SEC play with the loss. But the moment of sportsmanship? That will live on forever.

MLS doesn’t understand Rocky Mountain geography

Altitude.

It’s the reason most teams lose when they visit the Rocky Mountain states, and it’s the reason teams from Utah and Colorado have an inherent advantage, if you believe some national pundits.

And it’s also the reason the Colorado Rapids put a major ding in Real Salt Lake’s playoff hopes with a 1-0 win Sunday night, according to Major League Soccer.

Denver — or “the Mile High City” — is located at 5,280 feet above sea level. Salt Lake City is only 4,226 feet above sea level.

Big advantage.
