KEARNS — Suspects in a car fired several rounds into a group of juveniles on Sunday morning in Kearns, according to police.

Officers responded just before noon to the shooting, which took place near 6200 S. Loder Drive (5155 West), Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke said.

A 17-year-old male was fair condition after one bullet struck his leg, Lohrke said.

Witnesses told police two people pulled up in a passenger car to a group of juveniles that was walking west on 6200 South. The suspects fired four or five rounds into the group.

Investigators were searching for two suspects in a tan Chevrolet Impala with a temporary license plate tag in the rear window. Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call Unified police at 801-743-7000.

Lohrke said the shooting appeared to be gang-related.

"We’ve had a couple shootings here in Kearns now in the last couple weeks," he said. "We're not sure if those shootings are related, but it seems to be escalating activity amongst the gangs here — something our Metro Gang Unit takes very seriously."

According to witnesses at the scene, one group was wearing red and another group was wearing blue, which means the shooting might have involved gangs, Lohrke said.

A portion of 6200 South was closed on Sunday as police processed the scene and searched for evidence.

The Metro Gang Unit and the Unified Police Department Violent Crimes Unit were investigating the case, he said. No suspects had been arrested as of 2 p.m. Saturday.

Lohrke said police investigators have ramped up their activities with the more frequent shootings recently.

"With certain groups, as they get more and more active, they just draw more attention to themselves," he said.
