SOUTH SALT LAKE — Emergency responders trying to help a woman who was shot in South Salt Lake last month also had to deal with bear spray.

The 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg and torso on July 23 in a hallway at 390 E. 2700 South. The residence is an older house converted into apartments.

According to a search warrant affidavit unsealed over the weekend in 3rd District Court, the woman was able to call 911 after being shot.

"Patrol officers arrived prior to the fire department and attempted to clear (the house), but had to leave quickly due to a high concentration of bear spray which had been sprayed inside the apartment," the warrant states.

South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller said Monday that some sort of chemical irritant was deployed during the confrontation that resulted in the shooting, but he could not confirm if it was bear spray or regular pepper spray.

The woman told police she was "in a chair" when she was shot, the warrant states, and that the shooting was drug related.

Morgan Winger, 32, who is considered a person of interest in that shooting, was arrested Aug. 2 following a chase with police in the Sugar House area. Two days later, he was indicted in federal court on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of meth with intent to distribute.

Winger has an extensive criminal history in Utah. In 2015, he was a passenger in a stolen car that crashed into the living room of a Midvale home while trying to flee from police.
