HONEYVILLE, Box Elder County — Fire crews are battling a 800-acre wildfire near this small Box Elder County town.
The fire started Sunday afternoon and grew quickly. The cause is under investigation, according to Mitch Zundel, economic director for Box Elder County.
As of 9 p.m., crews had the fire 25 percent contained. No structures were threatened at that time, Zundel said.
The fire's location made it hard to fight, officials said.
"It's been quite difficult because of the terrain. It's quite rocky and steep," said assistant fire warden Chris Richards, with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
Additionally, Richards said crews haven't been to do many airdrops because of the power lines running along the base of the mountains.
"We were able to get a few (airdrops) in there that were higher up on the state land, and that was the only way we could use (the airdrops) up there," he said.
Most of the firefighters' work has been on the ground, and they expect that work will go on for a while.
"We're going to have resources on it all night," Richards said. "The forest service will be monitoring their end that's in the wilderness and we'll have our local volunteers through the night to make sure we keep it in check."
