GARDEN CITY — Many people are drawn to Bear Lake for the water, but a good number will not leave town until they've had a raspberry shake.

Christian Overton, who came up for the first time since his childhood says they're just as he expected.

"I'll tell you what. The raspberries here in Bear Lake taste a lot different," he said. "I still remember them tasting the way that they do today."

Getting the raspberries to the public isn't an easy process, however, and often the weather has a major impact. From his family farm in Laketown, Patrick Floyd said he's getting the best harvest in several years.

"We're still harvesting, which makes it a longer season than we've had for five or six years," Floyd said.

His family primarily produces raspberry jam and salsa.

"We've developed a real niche market," he said. "People that really love our products have come to appreciate the fact that they're made here in Bear Lake."

Floyd explained that while not all the raspberries around Bear Lake come from Rich County, there are still families like his that do so.

"We want the public to be informed that there are still farmers here," Floyd explained. "There are a lot of acres here, and there are a lot of raspberries that were produced this year because we had a decent year in weather."

With the strong season, Floyd said his family will be able to bring in one more round of crops before the harvest is over. He hopes it will do the same for others, as it helps his family keep their tradition going.

Overton said he now plans to come to Bear Lake more often, passing on a tradition to his children.

"My dad used to bring us up here, and we used to have raspberry shakes," he said. "That was one of his favorite things."
