SALT LAKE CITY — The 13th annual Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah began Monday in Logan. The event will be held throughout the state over the next seven days.
Bikers from all over the world will race across Utah in hopes of being named the champion of "America’s Toughest Stage Race."
With hundreds of athletes competing, the Tour of Utah has released several traffic advisories to help with businesses, residents and visitors who could be impacted by the race.
While several roads will experience complete closure during the race, several roads will still be opened and will need to be shared with cyclists. The Tour of Utah has given a few tips for motorists:
- Passing is not permitted by any motor vehicle along the road being used by the professional cyclists or authorized race caravan vehicles.
- Traffic is allowed to follow behind the race, but only at the same speed as the race, which averages 22 to 28 miles per hour.
- If you are traveling toward the race (in the opposite direction of the race), the Utah Highway Patrol will be controlling all traffic at certain intersections, treating it as a rolling road closure.
- Without alternate routes, please be patient as some delays may occur.
Tuesday, Aug. 1: Brigham City to Snowbasin Resort, 9:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m.
The race will cause several road closures in Brigham City Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon. The race will cause delays along North Ogden Canyon Road as the racers head to Snowbasin Resort. The finish line will be at 3925 Snow Basin Road. Spectator traffic should use state Route 167 to access the Harmony Healthy Living Expo and other finish line activities.
Wednesday, Aug. 2: Big Cottonwood Canyon, 11 a.m.-1:45 p.m.
This stage of the race will begin at the Donut Falls Trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The finish line is located at Brighton Resort. There will be a 6-mile section of the canyon closed to all traffic at 9 a.m. After 9 a.m., no vehicle traffic will be allowed past Solitude Resort. That portion of the road will be reopened to vehicles around 2:15 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 3: South Jordan to South Jordan, 8:55 a.m.-2 p.m.
The race starts at 10996 S. Redwood Road, adjacent to South Jordan City Park. The area surrounding the park will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and will reopen at 7 p.m. on Thursday. There will be delays along the Mountain View Corridor at different points during the race throughout the day.
Friday, Aug. 4: Layton to Bountiful, 9:10 a.m.-1:45 p.m.
The race begins at 465 N. Wasatch Drive in Layton. Roads surrounding the area will begin to close on Thursday at 8 a.m. Near the end of the race there will be two 9-mile circuits along the Bountiful Bench area. Motorists should expect delays from 12:45 p.m. until the end of the race at 2 p.m. The finish line for this stage is located at 20 S. Main Street in Bountiful.
Saturday, Aug. 5: Heber Valley to Snowbird Resort, 1:10-3:45 p.m.
This stage begins in Midway, adjacent to the Soldier Hollow Stadium, and will then go around Deer Creek Reservoir where delays should be expected. The race will end with cyclists going up Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Little Cottonwood Canyon Road will be closed to all traffic from 1-5 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 6: Salt Lake City Downtown Circuit, 1-3:45 p.m.
The final stage of the Tour of Utah will begin on East Capitol Drive. There will be traffic delays along the 6.8-mile course. Traffic will be restricted and no parking will be allowed on several streets, such as the northbound lanes of East Capitol Blvd., South Temple and Bonneville Blvd., among others.
