WELLSVILLE, Cache County — Police have identified the victim of a fatal crash that took place near the intersection of U.S. 89 and state Route 101 on Wednesday afternoon.

Marcos Torres, 26, of Brigham City, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement sent Thursday by Logan City Police Department.

Torres was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck north out of Sardine Canyon toward Logan around 2 p.m.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to calls of reckless and erratic driving. Troopers tried to stop Torres as he approached 6200 South U.S. 89 in Wellsville, but he accelerated rapidly into the intersection, according to the statement. Torres veered into oncoming traffic where his truck collided with a semitrailer, which caused an explosion and fire.

The driver of the semitrailer, William Gray of Rigby, Idaho, was on fire when he exited his vehicle. A trooper extinguished Gray, and he was later taken by medical helicopter to University of Utah Hospital.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing as of Thursday afternoon. Logan police assisted UHP with the accident investigation.
