WELLSVILLE, Cache County — A person fleeing from Utah Highway Patrol troopers died after the vehicle they were driving collided with a semitruck Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of the crash at the intersection of U.S. 89 and state Route 101 shortly before 2 p.m.

Marissa Cote, Department of Public Safety public relations director, said Utah Highway Patrol troopers spotted a vehicle that police were searching for and attempted to pull it over.

"At that point, the vehicle did flee," she said. "A pursuit did begin. The vehicle reached high rates of speed — at that point, it collided head-on with a semi."

Coty said the driver of the fleeing vehicle, whose name, age and gender was not immediately released, died in the crash and the driver of the semitruck suffered serious injuries.

The crash temporarily closed southbound lanes of U.S. 89. Utah Department of Transportation officials said traffic was being diverted west on S.R. 101 and then onto state Route 23 to U.S. 89/91.
