SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah picked up a big-time receiver Tuesday, according to a report by Scout.com.
Scout’s Michelle Bodkin was the first to report the signing of former University of Oregon receiver Darren Carrington Tuesday. Rivals.com later confirmed the report.
Carrington was suspended following his arrest in connection with a misdemeanor charge of DUI on July 1. He was later released by Oregon on July 14 as a result of the incident. The incident was not the first for Carrington, who was forced to skip the 2015 College Football Playoff national championship for failing an NCAA drug test.
Carrington was Oregon’s leading receiver, averaging 17.1 yards per catch in his career. He had 606 yards and five touchdowns last season, including a game-winning touchdown against the University of Utah where he was able to keep his foot inbounds in the corner of the end zone.
Utah athletics would not confirm the signing to KSL.com, but Bodkin said Carrington and the university wanted to allow him to “quietly go to work.”
Carrington will enter the season as a senior and is eligible for play immediately after graduating from Oregon in June.
Utah opens up fall camp on Friday afternoon.
