PARK CITY — The Weber State football team was picked to finished fifth place in the Big Sky Conference this upcoming season.

The preseason polls were released Tuesday at the conference's media day in Park City. The polls were determined by votes from the league’s head coaches and the media.

In both the coaches poll and the media poll, the Wildcats were picked to finish fifth. In the coaches poll, Weber State totaled 103 points with one vote for first place. In the media poll, the team received 209 votes.

North Dakota finished first in both polls while Eastern Washington was picked to finish second in both polls followed by Northern Arizona, Cal Poly, Weber State, Montana and Southern Utah.

In the 2016 season, Weber State finished the season in third place in the Big Sky with a conference record of 6-2. Their only conference losses were to North Dakota and Northern Arizona. With an overall record of 7-5, Weber State made it to the FCS playoffs last year for the first time in seven years. The Wildcats also finished the season nationally ranked in FCS.

Weber State is led by head coach Jay Hill who is entering his fourth season as head coach. The team also returns this season with 34 letter winners and 15 starters.

A notable returner is All-American tight end, Andrew Vollert, who led the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns last season. Stefan Cantwell will most likely be the starting quarterback for the team. The senior played in nine games last year and threw a touchdown pass in their FCS playoff game.

Vollert, cornerback Taron Johnson, linebacker Landon Stice and punter Jacob DeMaio were all named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team.

The Wildcats open their season on Sept. 2 against Montana Western. They will begin conference play on Sept. 23 at home against UC Davis.
