MANTUA — Mike Dowdy has been around pro wakeboarding for a while, but the defending Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour champion had never been to Utah.

His first visit did not disappoint.

Dowdy earned the top spot on the podium with a first-place performance of 97.83 points Saturday at Mantua Reservoir in the organization's first-ever stop in the Beehive State.

“Today’s been an awesome day," Dowdy told KSL Sports. "This is our first time in Utah, and the crowd is really, really good. The wake is awesome, the weather is beautiful, and I’m just stoked to be here.”

Australia’s Nic Rapa, the tour’s rookie of the year in 2016, finished second with 97.50 points, edging world champion Harley Clifford by .1 points in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000 people that flooded the town of 786 people that lies between Box Elder and Cache counties.

“If you look at the crowd, they obviously know where Mantua was," said Shota Tezuka, who finished sixth. "We’ve had one of the best turnouts we’ve had in a couple of years.”

Parker Payne, 17, finished first in the wake surf division, edging out Noah Flegel.

The competition also featured history, such as when Tony Iacconi of Australia became the first pro wakeboarder to land a double flip in a competition.

Saturday’s event included pro wake surf semifinals, as well as traditional wakeboarding events.

The tour next heads to Colorado Springs for a July 22 tournament, before finishing the season in West Chester, Ohio at the end of the summer.
