SALT LAKE CITY — A handful of local baseball players were selected Tuesday during the 2017 Major League Baseball first-year player draft, beginning with arguably the top prep player in the state.

Lone Peak pitcher Seth Corry was selected in the third round by the San Francisco Giants at No. 96 overall. The Knights southpaw was the Gatorade Utah baseball player of the year and Deseret News Mr. Baseball in 2017, when he helped Lone Peak to a 24-7 record and Class 5A state runner-up finish.

The No. 1 ace on the Knights’ roster and one of the top pitchers in the state, Corry posted an 8-0 record with a 2.29 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. He showed a particular command of the curveball, with a fastball that hovered up to 92 miles per hour.

Corry signed with BYU last November, but is expected to earn a signing bonus greater than $500,000, according to MLB’s sliding scale of draft bonuses. A Perfect Game All-American and first-team all-state selection as early as his sophomore season, Corry’s future appears to be in Major League Baseball and would start as early as this summer in rookie league ball.

"Seth is a high profile player who was recruited by most universities in the country," BYU baseball coach Mike Littlewood said at the time. "As a left-handed pitcher he brings one of the best fastballs in the country, and as good as he is on the mound he is equally impressive as an outfielder and hitter."

Also selected Tuesday was former American Fork pitcher Riley Otteson, a Utah sophomore who was picked in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The No. 160 overall pick posted a 5-4 record with a 4.93 ERA for the Utes, and stands to earn a potential signing bonus of nearly $300,000 if he signs with the Dodgers this summer.

Utah’s Jayson Rose, a junior from Alpine, California, was an eighth-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers. The 6-foot- right-handed pitcher posted a 3.35 ERA in 15 starts for the Utes before being taken No. 234 overall by the same organization that drafted last year’s top local prospect, Payton Henry of Pleasant Grove.

With a ninth-round pick (No. 264 overall), the Brewers also selected Utah third baseman Dallas Carroll. The senior who prepped at Taylorsville High batted .369 with 52 RBI and seven home runs for the Utes in 2017, a year after his twin brother Dalton was selected in the 21st round of the 2016 draft by the Atlanta Braves.
