EUGENE, Ore. — Rory Linkletter’s second trip to the NCAA track and field championships has netted a medal for BYU.
The Canadian sophomore who prepped at Herriman High School finished second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29 minutes, 2.96 seconds Wednesday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Linkletter’s final lap of 55.77 seconds helped him pull away for a second-place finish to Tulsa’s Marc Scott, who won the event with a time of 29:01.54. Butler’s EriK Peterson was third at 29:04.74.
Linkletter’s finish is the best by a BYU distance runner since the college days of head coach Ed Eyestone, who won the NCAA national championship in the 10,000 meter in 1985.
Cougar Clayton Young finished 17th with a time of 29:39.80.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, BYU's Jacob Heslington posted a mark of 8:43.23 to finish seventh overall and clinch a spot in the final heat on Friday.
Tennessee’s Christian Coleman set a collegiate record in the 100-meter semifinals with a time of 9.82 seconds in a heat where BYU sprinter Tatenda Tsumba finished seventh at 10.29.
The championships will continue Thursday on ESPN with a handful of BYU athletes, including Shea Collinsworth’s semifinal in the 800-meter run and Jackson Walker’s decathlon finish.
