SPANISH FORK — Hannah Peterson allowed just one run in a complete-game effort, and South Summit jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first inning en route to a 9-1 win over Beaver in the Class 2A softball state championship Saturday at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex.
After scoring four runs on a pair of first-inning errors, Amy Liar made it 5-0 to help the Wildcats to their second state title in three years. Peterson added an RBI during the Wildcats' three-run sixth inning to help seal the win.
Beaver’s second-place finish capped the best softball season in school history. The Beavers topped Manti, 8-4 in the one-loss bracket final earlier Saturday.
2A BASEBALL
Gunnison 9, Grand 4 — At Kearns, Parx Bartholomew struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings, and the Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-1 lead and cruised past the Red Devils.
Ty Hill went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Bulldogs, pounding out one of the team’s five doubles.
Grand held off Kanab 9-5 in the one-loss bracket final earlier Saturday.
