OGDEN — An Ogden resident says someone stole a brand new laptop off his front porch. He's hoping video from a tiny camera at his front door will help solve the case.

Abraham Shreve said his son earned a Chromebook by learning the value of hard work. The new laptop arrived on their doorstep Wednesday afternoon, but Shreve said the computer never made it inside the house.

"The days that it said it was delivered — the tracking information says it was delivered — came and went," Shreve said. It didn't take long for him to figure out what may have happened.

"We went and checked (the video) and it had been taken," he explained. "I could see him. I could see his face perfectly clear. I could see him walk up, take it and run off."

Shreve installed a doorbell video camera system last year. He said the video showing the theft came from that camera not long after the package arrived.

"Here he comes, right up to our home. He's smiling. Grabs it. Big smile. Off he goes," Shreve said as he watched the video. Shreve called police and posted the video to Facebook. He said the response made him realize how willing his community is to help.

"In four hours, it was shared 127 times and viewed just over 9,800 times," he said. "We're proud. We're proud to be here. We're proud of our community."

Later, Shreve posted on Facebook, "You found him. I have removed the video and photos so the Ogden City Police Department can do their thing."

Ogden police said they have not identified a suspect. They are asking anyone who recognizes the man in the video to call them.
