SALT LAKE CITY — A sergeant who was in the right place at the right time may have prevented an armed robbery at a local convenience store over the weekend, police say.

About 12:15 a.m. Saturday, a Salt Lake police sergeant was inside a 7-Eleven when a man walked in and grabbed a case of beer, said Salt Lake police detective Robert Ungricht. The man made brief eye contact with the officer and then quickly walked out the door to a car parked across the street that was waiting for him, he said.

The sergeant thought it was suspicious that the car was across the street, something typically done during robberies, so he followed the car and pulled it over on a traffic violation near 1157 W. California Ave., Ungricht said.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he spotted a gun under the driver's leg, drew his own weapon and called for backup, Ungricht said.

Inside the vehicle, police found the gun the driver was hiding, a loaded gun under the passenger seat, six loaded magazines, and discovered one of the occupants was also wearing a bulletproof vest. The man claimed he stole the body armor and a gun from an apartment.

Shawn Manymules, 25, of Salt Lake City, was arrested for investigation of possession of a firearm by a restricted person and obstruction of justice. Brandon Luna, 21, of Salt Lake City, was arrested for investigation of possession of a firearm by a restricted person and theft by receiving stolen property. Both men are documented gang members, according to police.
