MOVIE LAND — Recently, due to the fact that my favorite streaming service was shut down, I have gone back to renting movies from our favorite little red kiosk, Redbox.

I am a cheapskate and I hate paying the price for some of the alternative streaming services, even if that means I have to hop in the car and drive a mile away to the nearest Redbox.

Here are a few awesome movies currently available that are worth the trek to your nearest Redbox, so you can wait in line while the couple in front of you scrolls through every movie and can’t make a decision, even though you know exactly what you are there for. These movies are also worth the trek to return it the next day (if you don’t forget like I usually do.)

"Masterminds"

If you're not a fan of Jared HessNapoleon Dynamite or Nacho Libre, odds are you won’t enjoy “Masterminds," which he also directed.

“Masterminds” is based on the true story of an armored truck driver, who isn’t the brightest, but was able to pull off one of the biggest bank heists in American history.

This movie stars Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis. Although some of the performances are wasted, there is enough comedy coming through Galifianakis and Sudekis to keep you laughing.

"Loving"

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who I believe is one of the best storytellers in Hollywood right now, “Loving” focuses on a couple in Virginia in the 1950s who challenged the Supreme Court about their interracial marriage which was illegal at the time.

“Loving” is not fast-paced, but the performances by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga are fantastic, and even Nick Kroll who is usually known for his comedic performances, was great in this film. What I really liked about this film was that it seemed real. There weren't overdramatized scenes, and Nichols just has a way of telling great stories at a great pace that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

"Lights Out"

This was a movie that I had no desire to see when I saw the trailers. It looked like it might be the same scare gimmick throughout the entire movie. Well, after seeing a lot of positive reviews on it, I gave it a go and I was right, it is the same scare tactic throughout the entire movie. But for some odd reason, it really works.

The story isn’t all that groundbreaking or clever. A girl, played by Teresa Palmer, investigates why there is a scary entity haunting her little stepbrother that also haunted her when she was younger. The real star of the movie is the dark and the building anticipation.

Somehow director David Sandberg is able to make the same jump scare tactic work over and over again. I recommend watching this one in the dark— just make sure you have your nightlights ready to go for when you go to bed.

"Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life"

This movie is geared toward kids that are probably between the ages of 6 and 13. The film surprised me because it looked like a rip-off of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” but it was a lot different and was a movie that not only had laughs but had a lot of heart.

The story is based around a kid named Rafe who has a very active imagination and a problem following rules. He transfers to a very strict middle school and finds himself battling the rules of an overzealous principal.

While it was definitely geared toward tweens, adults will find it entertaining to watch with their kids. And like I said, it will catch you off guard with real moments of heart.

"The Magnificent Seven"

If you are looking for a fun, turn-off-your-brain-and-just-see-an-awesome-action type movie, then “The Magnificent Seven” fits that bill.

This remake is based around seven outlaws who are hired by a tiny town to protect them from a ruthless industrialist who wants to basically force them off their land.

Not even an all-star cast the likes of Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke can steal the show from all the crazy gunslinging action in the movie. If action is what you love, then this is your movie. Just sit back and enjoy a straight and simple plot with some crazy entertaining action.

What other movies would you recommend that are currently in Redbox? Let us know in the comments.
