BRIGHAM CITY — Three Box Elder County teenagers were hospitalized and two other teens were injured Friday night when an SUV crashed into a power pole, police said.

The five teens were using the Jeep SUV to "jump" the railroad track grade across a dirt road at 1500 North and 800 West when the vehicle struck the tracks, causing the driver to lose control, according to the Brigham City Police Department.

A 16-year-old girl was driving the SUV, police said, with another 16-year-old girl in the front passenger seat, and a 15-year-old girl and 17- and 16-year-old boys in the back seat.

The three back-seat passengers were ejected from the vehicle, police said.

All five teens were transported by ambulance to Brigham City Community Hospital. From there, one of the teen boys was taken by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital, and one of the girls was taken by ambulance to Primary Children's.

One of the girls was admitted to Brigham City Community Hospital, and the other two were treated and released.

Police said the incident is similar to one that occurred in 1987, when four juveniles died after their vehicle was hit by a train while they were trying to jump the tracks at the same location.

Police said the 16-year-old driver will be cited with reckless driving.
