UINTAH COUNTY — One man was arrested and two juveniles were detained following a high-speed pursuit early Sunday morning.

The pursuit began around 2:45 a.m. on 6500 East in Fort Duchesne after a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer attempted to stop a passenger car for speeding. Uintah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Fletcher said when the officer activated his lights and siren, the vehicle sped away from the officer at a high rate of speed.

Fletcher said as the officer pursued the vehicle, a handgun was fired from the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit continued on roads in and around Fort Duchesne, reaching speeds of 90 mph and continued east on Highway 40 towards Vernal.

Uintah County deputies and BIA officers continued to pursue the vehicle at speeds that exceeded 100 mph, as items were being thrown from the fleeing vehicle.

Fletcher said prior to the pursuit reaching Vernal, a Vernal City police officer was able to deploy tire spikes, successfully deflating one of the fleeing vehicles’ tires. The vehicle continued through Vernal before the driver turned the vehicle onto a dead end road at 700 S. 500 East where it came to a stop.

Officials said one adult male and two juveniles were taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jarvis C. Cuch, 27, of Fort Duchesne, was booked into jail in connection with aggravated assault on a peace officer, weapon possession, obstruction of justice, driving under the influence, child endangerment and multiple other offenses.

Officials said at the time of Cuch’s arrest, he was a fugitive with the U.S. Marshals Service.

The two juveniles were taken to Split Mountain Youth Detention Center and were later released to family, Fletcher said.
