SALT LAKE CITY — A coalition of Utah media organizations is calling on a judge to make public any video of a fatal police shooting inside a federal courthouse that becomes part of a wrongful death lawsuit.
The group of 10 organizations — including KSL and the Deseret News — said in court documents Friday that video of the 2014 shooting raises questions about police use of force during a public trial, and the U.S. government shouldn't be granted permission to file it under seal.
Federal attorneys want to use the video as part of their defense against a lawsuit filed over the death of 25-year-old Siale Angilau. Authorities say Angilau was shot by a U.S. marshal after lunging at a witness with a pen during his racketeering trial.
Federal officials have refused previous calls to release video of the shooting.
