SALT LAKE CITY — A man police say was jaywalking across 1300 East during the Tuesday morning commute was hit and killed.
About 7 a.m., Lester Dewey 41, of Idaho Falls, was crossing 1300 East near 2300 South — an overpass over I-80 — with his brother.
The men had successfully crossed the southbound lanes, but Dewey was hit by an SUV while trying to cross the northbound traffic, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking.
It was still dark and the SUV did not have time to stop, Wilking said.
Both men had backpacks, but it was not immediately known where the men were headed.
No charges were pending against the driver.
All northbound lanes were closed on 1300 East at the I-80 ramps, and all traffic was being diverted. The exit ramp from eastbound I-80 to 1300 East was also closed.
