SALT LAKE CITY — Down by eight in the fourth quarter and 20 seconds left in the game, Alex Smith lined up on a critical fourth and 10 play. Getting 10 yards for the first was a daunting task against last season’s No. 1 defense. Nicknamed the “No Fly Zone,” the Broncos secondary had held Smith to abysmal numbers up to that point in the game.

Smith dropped back, and found rookie gem Tyreek Hill on an out route for 11 yards, giving the Chiefs a chance. The next play Smith found Hill again on a slant route for a touchdown. Now down 24-22, Smith had to find a way to convert two points, and he did on a pass to Demetrius Harris. The Chiefs ended up winning 30-27 as time expired in overtime on a field goal.

In other local news, two rookies from Southern Utah University, Miles Killebrew and LeShaun Sims, both totaled their career high in solo tackles. They both have five apiece, and both of their teams won. Killebrew, a fourth-round pick, has slowly been worked into the defense more and more, and the way he’s playing it looks like he’s here to stay. Sims, a fifth-round pick, only had four career tackles before getting five last game, and with the release of Perrish Cox, his playtime is likely to stay increased in the foreseeable future.

Kyle Van Noy was active for the second week in a row and recorded a couple tackles. His role has been one of rushing the passer, which he is happy with. The Patriots are looking for a good mix at linebacker after trading Chandler Jones in the offseason and trading Jaime Collins a few weeks ago. Van Noy is taking advantage of that.
